To our members and supporters,

WHA is launching a medical, dental and teaching mission to Phan Thiet & Can Tho, Vietnam.  As the team departs, I'd like to share with you a few details about WHA's latest medical relief mission.

WHA's 2010 Vietnam Mission Team consists of primary care physicians and general dentists, medical specialists, a surgeon, a physician assistant, pharmacists, nurses, dental assistants, and support staff.  The 26 international team members will come together from Canada, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Texas, California, and Vietnam.  This team is 15% larger than the team we sent to Laos in 2008 and 31% larger than the Can Tho mission team in 2006.  This year's team will carry approximately 1,200 lbs of medical supplies, medicine and equipment into Vietnam.

WHA's mission objectives are 1) to provide free medical and dental care to approximately 1,500 under-served patients in and around Phan Thiet; 2) to assist the family practice teaching program at the Can Tho school of medicine; and 3) to perform a feasibility study on establishing an open heart surgery program.

WHA volunteers have been preparing for this mission for the past 6 months.  Our foreign diplomacy team worked diligently to ensure proper governmental permission for the mission.  The nursing team  inventoried the medical supplies and tested our medical equipment to ensure proper working order.  The pharmacy team just received its last supply shipment the day before our departure.

Thanks to our donors' support, the WHA team is equipped to handle just about every medical emergency it sees in the field.  The medical team, for example, has the capability to perform comprehensive vital signs monitoring with bedside multi-parameter telemetry, emergency defibrillation, external cardiac pacing, cardiac arrest management, cardiac and vascular ultrasound, IV hydration, minor surgery, comprehensive blood chemistry analysis with a state-of-the-art chemistry analyzer, and rapid field testing for HIV, and urinary infection.  The team also has a well-stocked pharmacy managed by three pharmacists who will work closely with our physicians to handle a majority of the ailments that we will see in the field.

local elderlyLikewise, our seven volunteer dentists and two dental assistants are equipped with six portable dental units complete with drill and suction capabilities.  Our dentists will be able to offer a full array of dental services to patients in the field.  The dental team will need plenty of electricity to run its operation, so it will bring along two portable power generators and water filtration units to handle the work load when electricity or clean water are not otherwise available.

The mission members are looking forward to sharing these experiences with our supporters at home and will be uploading daily mission blogs and pictures beginning on November 3rd.  Click on our website and follow the mission along with us!

Our Thanks

On behalf of WHA and the Vietnam Mission Team, thank you for supporting WHA through the years.  Without your help, this mission would not be possible.  The team will do its best to bring care to those who need it most and to make our WHA members proud of our program heritage.

The Vietnam Mission Team would like to express its particular appreciation to Americares, MedPharm, International Aid, PNC Bank, CVS Pharmacy, Teva Medical, Inova Alexandria Hospital (VA), Christiana Care Hospital (DE), our physician supporters in Northern Virginia, Texas, California, Washington, Massachusetts, Delaware, Ottawa, and the Vietnamese American Medical Association of the USA.
